Landscape Plein Air Painting challenges an artist to paint fast, endure changing lighting conditions and build confidence in their painting techniques. Successful paintings are fresh, not overworked, and have the feel that the artist knew exactly what they wanted to capture with effortless ease. Nothing compares to a day outdoors when a painting literally paints itself. It’s those days I reflect back and think, how did I do that? Then I realize, I just got out of the way and let creativity take over and do the work. It’s a very spiritual and rewarding experience. Unfortunately, not every session turns out this way. It can be compared to gambling, when you are winning, you are on top of the world, however when you are losing, it doesn’t feel so good, but you keep going back in hopes of winning again. Painting outdoors is like that. You want every painting to be a success, however some painting experiences and outcomes are better than others.
